It's Finally Spring!

Grass and Fresh Air Coma
At last - a day that is warm enough and a yard that is grassy enough to allow for the first outing of the year.  As I write this, Pinni and Bertie are sound asleep in the back yard, after hours of munching grass and sniffing at unseen breezes.

It took me a while to find all the pieces for the pen and set it up.  Then Bertie was not overly enthused when I brought them outside.  She didn't want to come out of her cozy.  She was more interested in eating the hay than the grass.  I'm sure an afternoon of fresh air has done wonders to her attitude.

I spent some of the afternoon with them, puttering about in the back yard.  Now, watching them is starting to make me sleepy.  They have the right idea - all this fresh air and sunshine is giving me a powerful urge to take a nap.

  1. I would like to get my new guy Stewart out in the yard. My last two Oliver and Wendell I did try to get them outside but it didn't go well. My husbands friend made this great pen for them and I had some houses for them and toys and all they did was lay as flat as possible and not move. It was funny for a minute but they were so scared I quickly scooped them up and brought them back in the house.

    1. I had one pair that reacted like that their very first time - some blackbirds calling in the trees really freaked them out. But we tried it again, and once they realized that the world wasn't out to get them, they settled in.

Some pigs never like the outdoors - it's too scary. But you may want to give it a second try before you give up on them.

  2. My boys loved the outside too much - they ate too much grass & got bloat! We have to carefully monitor their outside time from now on, which is a bummer because I know they'd just love to veg for hours outside in their playpen.

    1. Bummer (although that's good information to know).

I know that too much spring grass can also cause diarrhea - I wonder if that caused their bloat? Or were they out later in the year? Spring grass can cause problems because it's higher in water content than the tougher summer/fall grass.

  3. Hooray, grass! Bertie looks quite satisfied flopped over inside her tunnel.
