Snowflake Banner - Blogger's Quilt Festival

I love that I finished this just in time to enter into the fall Blogger's Quilt Festival in the Small Quilt category.

My quilting projects normally start with an end result in mind.  I'm making something for myself or a friend or donation.  These snowflakes were the first time I made blocks just for the sake of making them.  Then they sat for a while as I figured out what to do with them.  Who knew they'd start a trend:  I now have three stacks of various quilt blocks I've stitched up without a final item or destination in mind.

I found the snowflake patterns on the Canuck Quilter's Snowalong.  So many to choose from!  This was my first time attempt at paper piecing.  I really enjoyed making these.  I wanted to do more, but the dark blue ran out after four flakes.  I had to piece together the edges on the fourth block to get it square.

I worked with some light blue fabric over the summer that I thought would go well with the dark blue snowflakes.  As I finished that quilt, I started dreaming up this banner/table runner.  Something different for my front door than the traditional wreath I've put up for years.

I've never done a wonky setting before.  I had a hard time cutting it since it didn't look square under my ruler.  But I like the final result!

The big swirls make me think of the wind blowing the snowflakes around.  It was the first time freemotion quilting a whole swirly background.  The pattern itself wasn't that difficult, but it took a while to find a needle that was happy with my fabric.  I also managed to break two needles - my technique needs work.

It has pockets on the back for a hanging rod.  I also remembered to sew in a mini-label before I was done with the binding (instead of my usual routine of ripping out stitches to put it in after I'm all done).  This is going to look fantastic on my front door.

  5. I think your wonky setting really paid off. It kind of makes the snowflakes seem like they are floating down from the sky. Very cute.

  6. Great setting - sometimes you need to let a project cure for a bit while you decide how to proceed. I love what you did with these blocks.
