QAYG Hexies

Everyone seems to be doing hexie quilts.  I decided to see what the fuss was about.  Goodness!  There's so many styles and sizes.  I was a little overwhelmed at the thought of cutting a zillion little templates and hand stitching everything.  Then I stumbled across a quilt-as-you-go style:  each hexagon is batted and bound.  Then you can configure the finished pieces however you wish.  Oh, this has potential!

I made my template out of a bit of heavy card stock that was leftover from making little recipe books.  It works pretty well and they're a cute size (about 4").  I'm curious how well the template will hold up.

This seemed a great project for crumbs and scraps (especially the small bits of batting I have).  The blocks are small enough not to need quilting.  We'll see what moves me.  The original plan was to machine stitch the back to the front, then hand-sew the hexagons together.  I machine stitched the first two, to see how it went.  Not bad at all.

I may switch to hand stitching.  I've long been envious of my friends that knit - they can take their projects wherever they go.  Depending on how quickly the front and backs pile up, this may be a on-the-go project.  If that's the case, I may try a little hand-quilting on the pieces as well.  Should be fun, regardless.  Another new thing to learn!

  1. Your improv hexies are looking great! Maybe you could crochet them together? Just an idea I saw on a blog that crocheted fabric squares together for a baby blanket. Part quilt, part crochet.
