I Like Thursday: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic

The word like doesn't work so well as the word enjoy for some of today's topics.  But I think they'll be fine for I Like Thursday.

I enjoy meditating, or at least I like the after effects.  I don't do it nearly as often as I should.  I am grateful whenever I get a chance and think afterward:  I need to do more of this!

I discovered last week that meditating on the back deck is good stuff.  I don't know what motivated me to try it.  Between the breeze and the birds, it's a great way to drop into the here-and-now.  The deck has been mosquito-free this summer (I like that, too!), which makes it possible to sit still and not be eaten.

I like my mala beads.  I'm one of those people who has a hard time settling and doing nothing, which is what meditation is all about.  Mala beads give my fingers something to do while the rest of me tries to let go.

I enjoy learning.  Right now I'm tackling the Qur'an.  Years (and years) ago I read the entire Bible.  I figured the Qur'an is a lot shorter and have been meaning to read it for a long time.  Still a lot of work; I'm about halfway through and expect it will take a few more weeks to finish.  It has encouraged me to do some research on Muhammad and 600AD history.  Interesting stuff!

I normally read fantasy and sci-fi and some of it is quite fluffy, so non-fiction is more difficult to slog through.  It requires better comprehension, so I read slower.  I can't wait to get back to some lighter reading!  (Although I already have another non-fiction book on deck on Yamas and Niyamas.)

I enjoy writing (well, duh, otherwise why am I blogging?).  Pen on paper, in a journal, is a different experience.  My handwriting is terrible - I type so much now and rarely take written notes.  Regardless, I like the feel of writing by hand and I don't care if anyone can read it.  The focus is on the process, not the retrieving.

And one last silly like, to complete the title:  I enjoy doing quilting yardage calculations.  I know - nuts.  I just finished adding up yardage for a Celtic Solstice quilt for my mother.  I'm glad I double checked (my first pass didn't look quite right).  Can't wait to get the fabric and start sewing!

There's more to like over at Not Afraid of Color!  Be sure to stop by (and thanks for dropping in!).

  2. I like those things too... isn't it cool to find others like you? Don't have beads yet but I will.

  4. I didn't know about the beads either, but they seem like a lovely idea! I always gravitate toward flufflier stuff in my reading choices, but joining a book club since I retired from teaching has made me branch and read many things I never would have chosen for myself. Good luck with rading the Quran! That is quite a goal!
