First Round of Cleanup

Now that Winter Stars is out of my sewing room, I'm making progress on the piles of projects that are scattered about.

I started this mystery quilt back in March for a QAL from the Canuck Quilter.  I worked as far as the reveal, then set it aside until now.  I've recently added borders, made a flange binding (coiled in the lower left) and sandwiched it ready for quilting.

There were a set of extra pieces from Winter Stars that I stitched together.  This one block made me appreciate the approach I took with the quilt.  The pieces were uneven and a little too small.  I can see why they were rejects (or test blocks).  I had difficulty getting the points to match and the whole block ended up a little smaller than it should have been.  I'm so glad I took the time to oversize and then trim down the pieces I used in that quilt.  I nearly finished when I noticed two pieces were sewn in the wrong order.  I rarely had that problem when piecing together the king sized quilt.

Then I spent an entire afternoon frankensteining a pile of leftover batting pieces trimmed from at least three quilts.  I ended up with one very large piece (not pictured) and a handful of smaller sections.  The biggest one is now sandwiched in my mystery quilt and another for one of my mug rugs.

The mystery quilt instructions were for a rectangular baby quilt that I was converting into a square wall hanging.  So I ended up making more units that did not end up in the quilt.  I created these four blocks, which I plan to make into mug rugs.

While I'm thinking about how to quilt these, I'll continue piecing random stuff.

A good start.

  1. It looks like you have plenty to do after finishing your Winter Stars quilt. I'm cleaning up my sewing room after finishing up a large project. So nice to be able to see everything again!

  2. Cleaning up and reorganizing are always big jobs after a quilt finish, but it feels good when you get it done! Your Mystery Quilt is pretty - I love that snowflake print. Have fun quilting it!
