Songbirds - Blogger's Quilt Festival

Songbirds is my second entry to this year's Blogger's Quilt Festival.  This quilt was an insanely inspired weekend project.  I plotted and planned for a day or two, but the whole quilt was cut and stitched in slightly more than 24 hours.  Sometimes the creativity just takes over.  Whew.

This also happens to be my second quilt from Anna Maria Horner's feather quilt pattern.  I discovered the pattern goes together a lot easier when printed at 100%.  (Why is it so hard to PDFs at full size?)

My first feathers were based on macaw and African Grey feathers.  This pair was influenced by backyard songbirds:  cardinal and blue jay.  I had plenty of the reds and blues on hand.  I particularly liked the look of blue jay feathers when I googled for feathers.

I had considered quilting a simpler background, but couldn't help myself. These feathers just called for the swirls and pebbles.

I backed the quilt in a fabric with green branches and little nests of pink and blue eggs.  Perfect!  I added pockets to all four corners for a dowel, so it could be hung in any orientation.

The flange binding was to add a little interest to the edge and because it whips together faster than my traditional hand-stitched binding.

I really like this pattern.  I'm sure I'll make another feather quilt at some point.  And maybe try an easier quilted background?

Quilt Measurement:  18" x 18"
Technique:  machine pieced and quilted on my Singer 15-91

There are all sorts of amazing quilts to see at the Blogger's Quilt Festival.  Be sure to check them out!

  10. You can try to tell quilts what you want, but they will have their say. It's like these feathers are lying in clear, shallow water, so the viewer can see the ripples on the water and some of the pebbles beneath. Now doesn't that sound like the quilt knew where those feathers belong? I love the whole effort! (stepped in from Amy's quilt festival)
