Now that I've finished the 228 black-and-silver triangles it's time to work on the grey-and-black ones!
You may recall I decided to cut the fabric a little larger (maybe an eighth of
an inch) than the pattern called for. I then made myself a set of
plexiglass templates to help cut the stitched together diamonds and larger
triangles down to size. I ended up marking my templates with various
guide lines to help ensure I get all the pesky points in the right
place. Seems to be working pretty well so far... but the final test will
be when I stitch together the full blocks.

A reader asked me how I was pressing my seams to deal with so many points. In past pointy projects I've had the best luck in pressing all my seams open. I hate pressing open seams - fiddling with those small allowances and singing my fingers. Regardless, that's what I've committed to do with this project (all except for a couple of early pieces that I ironed to one side without thinking).
I stitched together a half-block that looks pretty good - it lays flat and I have to look carefully to find the non-matching points. I'm about halfway through making the grey and black triangles. Then I can start assembling blocks in earnest!
I'm sure your blocks are all going to be stitched together perfectly. You've got a great system going and you've thought of everything!
ReplyDeleteSewing your diamonds and triangles a little larger and then trimming is so smart, Sally! Then you don't have to worry about anything being too small. Looks like you are moving right along!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the way you've put the colors together, very striking. Sitting here nodding yes about the ironing difficulty, Will be fun seeing this come together. Keep posting pictures for us.

You are so clever to make your templates out of plexiglass...they will stay true throughout all the markings. And taking the time to press seams open, etc. will work out so well in the joining up at the end. If only I would learn to do these things too! This is going to be so beautiful, Sally.
