Ready for a laugh? I'm still fussing about the layout. Take a look at the next round of OMG-look-at-all-the-designs-by-just-moving-a-few-pieces. I created eight extra light grey triangles simply to make design layout less tedious. I also took the time on the computer visualize the full 56 blocks.
I collaged a few layouts together so this post isn't photo-heavy, but it can still be a bit overwhelming to look at. I think they resemble those magic eye pictures. What do you see?
First up - the boring layouts. I'm fascinated by the designs, so I'm showing them anyway. Top row is what a whole quilt would look like with a single block layout. The darker layout was the most popular based on earlier posts. I had researched lightening the quilt by swapping the black with grey but decided it washes out the quilt. I find them both too rigid. Hmm... let's go down the rabbit hole of combining the two.
A diamond pattern uses the Solid Middle dark layout with the Reversed Light blocks for a diamond shape. This allowed some lightening of the overall quilt, plus the added bonus of an interesting design. The first seems too small. The second is pretty good... but then I played some more...
This next set are my favorites - they all contain the same number of Solid Middle and Reversed Light blocks. The remaining differences are simply adding extra light grey triangles - their placement tends to smooth out the edges of the Reversed Light layout.
It's interesting how I like the smooth in some areas and not so much in others. In number 2 I smoothed out two of interior crosshatches. Number 3 retains the dip at the top and bottom outside edge, but has smoothed out the inside to be a diamond. Number 4 has points at the top and bottom (both inside and out). Part of me likes the smoothness of 2, 3 and 4, but I'm leaning towards 1 for having the most character.
Recipient gets last say. Regardless, I can start stitching the next round if triangles, confident that a chunk of them will use the black background.
Do you have a favorite pattern? Even one of the "boring" ones?

It never occurred to me that you could get those last four designs just by rearranging a little! They are all neat in one way or another. Do you see the dove shape that emerges in the top and bottom corners of the light sections? 1, 2, and 3 have four of them!
ReplyDeleteI can see why the bottom 4 are your favorites. I'm leaning towards #3 and #4. Would love to see the back side of the block to understand how you chose to handle the seams. There are so many points and seams coming together.
ReplyDeleteWhatever design you go for, it's a beauty. Interesting to see how the design change by rearranging the blocks. I would have chosen #3 or #4, unable to decide on one specific.
ReplyDeleteWow, all are fabulous. They remind me of those magic eye picture books, too. I cannot choose a favourite.
ReplyDeleteMy mind just boggles at the idea of 228 of these lovely triangle pieces being sewn, Sally! And how neat the design shifts with the layout. Wonderful stuff!
ReplyDeleteWow! You have so many options! I really like the ones with a diamond shape in the middle. They seem to offer a place for the eye to rest and enjoy the contrasting colors. It is going to be gorgeous either way. Beautiful blocks.
ReplyDeleteAll these patterns are so pretty! Your triangle pieces are so versatile. I don't think I can pick a favorite. There are too many great options!
ReplyDeleteI love boring #2!
ReplyDeleteAll of the options are interesting but mess with my eyes a little. ;) Thanks for sharing in my Sew & Tell party.
ReplyDeleteI both love and hate designs like this! How do you decide when all them are interesting in one way or another? Of course that's a happy problem to have! Hmmm, maybe this is the Quilt Muses telling you that you might just have to start on another set of blocks (maybe in another color) so you can make up a second favorite layout?!? I'm just sayin'......
ReplyDeleteI like #4 in the boring sets and #1 or #4 in the intricate sets. Or you can make all the design in different colourways, like that you will have them all. No favourite to pick. ;^)
ReplyDeleteWow, it took me a long time to figure out what was different between 1, 2, 3 and 4 :-) Best of luck! I'm sure that it will turn out wonderfully.
