Mini Wonky NYB

I wrapped up my mini wonky NYB which I am submitting for Small Works at Hope & Feathers.  The finished work measures six inches across.

It was a challenge!  Making the paper-pieced pattern wasn't difficult.  However, I painted myself into the proverbial corner in a few places that did not piece together well.  The small curves also proved to be challenging.

I have a rule on restitching a seam: I can rip it out twice and the third time stitching is final, even if it doesn't look right.  I figure if I can't fix it in that many tries, it's not going to work (and I'll only end up ruining the fabric in that spot).  As you can see, my outer circle isn't quite round and I hit my 2-to-3 rule in several places.

I wasn't sure the sewing machine would like quilting through so many layers.  So I decided to hand quilt it - that was a first!  I picked some of my shiny gold and light blue threads - I like the effect.

The first photo was in sunlight (which shows the stitching and texture but mutes the colors a bit), the second in shade (which super-saturated the colors for some reason).

I brought it in to Hope & Feathers on Friday.  They had a number of frames I could choose from.  Rob and I found three that looked good:  a dark gold, a light blue and one of light-colored wood.  Each of them picked up something in the piece.  After some feedback I went with the dark gold.  I'll hope to get a photo of it framed when we go to the grand opening.

I learned more about mounting and glass from one of the staff.  So... I'm all set for next year!  LOL  I already have ideas for another wonky NYB and thoughts on designing it.  Definitely will start on it earlier than I did this year.
