Dave, our foster guinea pig from Dakin Humane, stayed with us for barely three
days. I was so disappointed to see him go. He had
just started to settle in on Thursday night. I discovered he
loved to be scritched (and he had lovely, touchable soft fur). He
actually came up the the side of the cage simply for love and affection.
When I banged on the window the bear seemed only vaguely concerned and moved off a several feet, still very curious about something she smelled (probably the sugar water). I had been out in the yard not long before and had left only the screen door shut on the sunroom. Eek! Once she moved off I ran out and closed the door. Need to remember to keep that closed, too!
Where did June go?
Well, it wasn't spent quilting. This quilt hated the ideas I came up with it. I actually started stitching two different free-motion designs and ripped them out. I didn't make any progress until I switched to my walking foot. Now I remember why I hate stitching in the ditch (loved the walking foot, though). But it was progress! It was enough to get the ball rolling.
Our local porcupine greeted us on our walk a few weeks ago. He was a
little camera shy - when I approached to get a better photo he ducked for
cover.
Ooh, wow - I spent an amazing week on Cape Cod with my chicks! A few of the group couldn't attend, but those of us that could make it had terrific weather and good times all week.
Every day was an adventure: day-trips to Chatham, Wellfleet and Truro. Long walks on the beach. We enjoyed the sunset every evening and even roused ourselves out of bed one morning to see the sunrise. Even that was an unexpected adventure: 5:45am and traffic was backed up on Bracket Road between the high school and Nauset Light beach. From our vantage point two cars behind a cop car (with flashing lights) we could make out people walking down the street in the morning gloom. So I hopped out of the car, jogged up past the cops, joined the end of the procession and asked them what they were doing. Turns out we caught Senior Sunrise - an annual tradition of the seniors in the beginning of the school year to walk from the school to the beach for the sunrise. Interesting tradition!
Ahh.... late summer/early fall. I love the sounds of the buzzy-bugs and watching the antics of the swarming hummingbirds. My garden is rocking with the summer blooms, and if the @#$%^ groundhog didn't eat all my produce, I'd be enjoying my vegetable garden. Nobody seems to like cucumbers, so I was fairly successful with those. I'm making notes for next year.
Goodness. I've done nothing but quilting posts for over a month. I've done plenty of good things that aren't sewing that I'd like to share at I Like Thursday.
Let's start out this post with a guinea pig! This is Madea. She's the first foster we've had since October.
Madea is a sweetie and is settling in quite nicely. However, she doesn't know what to do with veggies. What kind of silly pig is this? She will only eat carrots. Not cucumber or lettuce or tomatoes or peppers or corn husks. I'm working on her.
First up - last week I saw a deer very cautiously step out of the woods into the side yard. I suspected she was being extra cautious because she had a fawn. I was right! Can you see it in that photo? Rob and I were amazed at how TINY it was. And it was so wobbly and unsure of itself, we figured it had to be newborn.
We saw both of them a few days ago (I see Mama haunting the edges of the yard
almost every day). Baby has grown a lot already!

Quilting cleanup projects are on deck, which are my favorite sewing projects
to work on. However, I'm not getting anywhere! Better weather has
lured me to spending time in the garden. I dislike the lack of sewing,
but I'm enjoying the gardening.
A tale of two sunflowers - both of these were planted at the same time.
The one near the house took off - the head must be about a foot wide.
The one closer in the photo struggled and the seed head is maybe three
inches. It's pretty, though!
Major dislike - my phone flaked out. I spent tons of time working on it,
thought I fixed it, then three days later it randomly shut down and refused to
reboot. A week later I spent another two days setting up a brand new
phone. Lots of teeth gnashing. Not fun. I'm aggravated over
learning a new UI and sound setup. Ugh.

I spotted this in the way home from an evening kayak. I'm not sure what
caught my eye first, the antique truck or the mini-church. I stopped to
get a closer look.
It's Thursday - time for some the things I liked this month! Not so fond of the of hot, steamy, wet days so far. I'm hoping for a little less humidity for the next weekend. We'll see. But lots of things that perked me up this month!
Ghost (the deer) stopped by a few times. One evening a fawn trotted up
to Ghost and tried nursing, much to Ghost's surprise (and annoyance).
What is this little pipsqueak trying to do?!? I hope the fawn found his
mom. I've seen him a few times since.
June is flying by (although the heat last week slowed things down a
bit). Lots of good stuff happened.
I've been really enjoying the garden. It's been a good spring for
growing and for the first time in two years the yard is not overrun with
ticks. I'm finally getting the hang of the garden's rhythm and I can
identify many more plants than I could when we first moved in.
I'm not the only one enjoying the yard: look at all that grass (and
clover) and one bitty bun. He's behaving better than the deer (who
decided to lop off two mallow plants and a sunflower that had been doing so
well).
May! Already so chock-a-block full I'm writing my Like post before

Ahhh... first kayak outing of the year. A beautiful evening, and early enough in the season the pond wasn't choked with weeds. I love being able to explore the nooks and crannies along the edge of the pond (and check out the beaver lodges).
I'm close to wrapping up a couple of projects.
Getting this jacket finished has been rough. I wanted to put pockets on the front of it, but I decided it was too short - the pockets would be just too high to use. So I've sewed up the sides and have most of it bound. I need to pick a binding for the sleeves since I ran out of the purple I used for the rest (oops). I plan to add toggle buttons, hoping to find some at Swanson's. Then that will be done.

Kicked off the month by catching up with old friends and co-workers. I started my first programming job with these guys. Two of them were new hires with me. The third guys I jokingly call my work husband - we've been working together for more than 30 years. Nuts!
My tall friend moved to Japan years ago - I haven't seen him since 2003.
He was in the states for a few weeks, so we took this opportunity to all get
together. I'm so glad we made this work.
I like that I made it to Family Weekend this year. Heading to the Cape was an adventure.
I picked Mom up at the commuter train station in Waltham. Rob was
tracking my phone and was highly entertained by my wrong turns getting to the
train station and then my inability to get back on 128. All 'round Robin
Hood's barn!
So let's start off with this week's prompt for I Like Thursday, which is: what's your favorite ice cream? Oh! Ice cream! Anything with chocolate makes me happy. This was Wednesday night's dinner. I have Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl topped with something called Boston Blackout (chocolate ice cream with brownies and fudge). The cup has Moosetracks, which is also pretty good. I've recently become a fan of S'mores ice cream (especially when paired with the Chocolate PB). Whatever ice cream I get, it definitely needs to go with a waffle cone. I love the different textures.
