Diamond Piles and Rounding Errors

I have stacks and stacks of diamonds.  They are spread across two rooms in various stages of completion.  I've lost track of how many I've cut (I think I have an extra 14 for some colors).  Oops!

I spent the week cutting and stitching them together.  Right now I have only 40 or so finished ones.  The majority are pinned ready for stitching and ironing and another 100 left to pin.  Eventually I will end up with two sets of 224 complete diamonds.

I always buy an extra half yard of fabric when I do a project like this.  No matter how careful I am, there's always a mistake in calculations.  Measure twice, cut once?  Absolutely.  But I also need to run through the calculations three times.  I have a spreadsheet to help me figure out how much yardage I need, which has been working pretty well.  However, a rounding error occurred for the middle fabric of the diamonds.  I had purchased only a quarter yard extra.

When I added an eighth of an inch to all the strips I cut (and cut one or two extra strips), suddenly I was left only a few inches left.  Which is fine!  Any extra leftover is good!  But I panicked a little as I was cutting strips and kept creeping closer and closer to the edge.

I'm hoping to spend several hours sewing and ironing this weekend!  When I finish the diamonds, I get to cut background triangles and start to play with the layout.

  4. I got a laugh out of the idea of those diamonds taking over the house! It will be fun to see how you put them all together. I like having a little extra fabric, too. You just never know what you might need!

  5. You've been a busy bee! All those diamonds cut! I also buy some extra yardage, never know what can happen at the cutting table. Happy (sewing) weekend!
