Project Quilting 16.4 - Birthstone Bowl Cozies

This week's Project Quilting challenge allowed me to pick off another backlogged project.  Yay!

The challenge required using my birthstone color, which is peridot.  I can't tell you how much I hated that color as a kid.  I wish I had been born in any other month than August!  The color grew on me about 20 years ago when I picked out a pair of peridot and amethyst earrings (still one of my favorite pairs).  While researching this project I discovered the stone comes in quite a variety of greens.  I dug through my stash and found a few fabrics that would work (ooh!  pretty!).

Way back in 2014 I made a set of bowl cozies that have gotten pretty ratty and shrunk from passing through the washer a zillion times.  Rob recently asked for some new ones.  I wanted these to have a little more pizazz than simply two pieces of fabric, so I pieced them together.  I should have read my old post prior to cutting these (I hope 10.5 inches is big enough and that the prewashed batting won't shrink so much).

The first photo is the most true to color - these look more mint green than the yellowy green they actually are.  I invented the patterns as I assembled each side: Strings are good!  Hmm.. I  should have a diamond to look like a gemstone.  How best to use the rest of that pale green?  By the end I was cobbling together based on what fabric was left.

They're all cotton:  fabric, batting and thread, because they'll be going in the microwave.  This time around I only used one layer of batting and rounded corners.  That made the stitching process easier and I like the look.

We've already used them (and christened them with slopped food - oops).  I look forward using them for quite a while!

  1. You found some pretty greens to put together for these, Sally! You remind me that I should make some new ones for us, too. Do you use the Wrap and Zap batting for yours?

  3. Hi Sally, it looks like those older cozies were simply two squares of fabric, maybe quilted (I can't tell). How did you get them to be bowl-shaped? They interest me because I'm a weaver and quilting is a big challenge with handwoven fabrics because the fabric is much bulkier.

  4. I like peridot myself and also love my stone, emerald. Emeralds and diamonds look so pretty together! LeeAnna
