I Like Thursday: A Walk in the Woods

Friends and I took a walk in the woods this weekend.  Saw lots of interesting things.

First stop was the little waterfall, as usual.  Everything around it was encased in ice.  This photo was my favorite: the water looks like it's been painted.  I swear I can see the brush strokes.

An afternoon of good company and food (then I squeezed in a dance in the evening).  Quite a day!

We came across a tree that had been snapped in half.  The one side of the trunk had been iced over - parts of it looked lacquered.  Parts look like it had been dyed green.  It was a stunning combination of color and texture.

Next to that stump was this odd string.  At first glance I thought it was a snake skeleton, but on closer inspection it looked like a plant.  It had all these little spiny segments, like something you'd find in the ocean.  Can you identify it?  It was the weirdest thing.

There was a lot of green for winter.  Turkey tail mushrooms are usually shades of beige and brown, but several here were bright green.  I tell you, someone had been running around the woods with green food coloring.

We were intrigued by this twisted tree.  Whatever vine had strangled it was long gone.  Hard to say which grew around which.  I really liked the corkscrew effect.

I thought my sister would like the patterns in the ice.  They were cool!  I love tapping on thin ice like this to listen to it snap and crackle as it breaks.  Brought back fond memories as a kid, coming home in soaking boots from jumping on frozen puddles (drove my mother nuts - mostly because I complain my boots were damp and cold the next morning).

Okay - enough of our walk in the woods.

Can I just say, I have the best friends.  This came in the mail yesterday.  I'm a quilting queen!  LOL.  This was a wonderful little pick-me-up after the crazy morning that I had.  What a fun surprise!  Thanks so much!  I know right where I'll hang it in my office.

Speaking of office - got a chance to meet up with my coworkers on Monday evening.  It's been ages (years?) since I've seen many of them.  We had a great evening.

I like that I've had time to sew!  Made a little rope bowl.  Then worked on turtles.  More turtle photos coming soon.

Those are my likes for the week.  There's more at Not Afraid of Color's I Like Thursday.

  1. Hi Sally! Such interesting things you found on your walk. It strikes me as just how gray everything is, and yet there are different shades of gray with just a wee bit of green thrown in. That was so nice of your friend to send you a surprise little pick me up gift! ~smile~ Roseanne

  5. This looks like a beautiful walk. I normally think of winter as not being very picture-worthy, but you have proven me wrong!

  7. Oh I love the photos of your walk. The waterfall is amazing. Have you seen the video of the guy skipping a rock on a frozen lake. The sound, my pool gets that sound at times too, it is so interesting.

  8. That corkscrew effect is the result of asiatic bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) growing up a sapling - can't tell for sure from your snap, but could be a black birch (Betula lenta) - and choking it slowly to death as the sapling continued to strive for survival and both continued to grow. Bittersweet will grow right over a mature tree's canopy as well, covering it like a light-intercepting blanket.
    Exotic invasives. Grrrrrrr.
    Ahem.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

  9. That sure looks like a snake skeleton. The ice pieces are my favorite. What a fun walk. Thanks for sharing as we don’t have woods nearby. Thoughtful friends.

  10. Those ice pictures are fantastic! We get ice storms here (though not yet this year), and while I hate them for the most part (really slick roads with no pretty snow), the ice covered trees are always beautiful.
