By Special Request

People like the name tags I've created.  Most of them are made of Sculpey.  I love the detail I can add to those name tags, but they're heavy and prone to breaking (only one of them has survived without repair).  I recently made one from fabric.  Much lighter, should be far more durable.  Nothing is going to snap off!  It's a whole different process to create.  I haven't figured out how add all the detail I'd like; I will be experimenting for a while.

A few weeks ago I was asked how one could get a Sally-made name tag.  I told him; he requested one in blue and green.  Weeks later, I finally had a little time to work on this.  Some research, two sets of background before I got it right and this what I created.

The letters are fabric, outlined with embroidery.  I found the letters online and printed them on freezer paper in two different sizes.  After I cut them, I discovered the bits fabric behaved better fused to lightweight interfacing:  it stopped the edges from fraying and made it possible to cut out the little holes.  I then sprayed them with adhesive and ironed them to the fabric.  Once they were affixed to the fabric, I embroidered a bit of white around the edges, which cleaned up the edges nicely.  I wasn't sure if I could get the fabric to stretch smoothly around the oval, but it wasn't too difficult.  The fabric letters are fine for short names, but I'll have to switch back to strictly embroidered letters for longer names.

I'm pleased with the result.  I hope he likes it!

  1. That is so nifty! My first reaction was "SO pretty! I need a nametag!" My second one was, "My first name has 11 letters...I'd need to wear it like a sign on a string around my neck." :)

  2. so cute! You could get fabric markers to do names, putting the sewn fabric on a light box to see your printed letters. It's hard to fuse tiny letters and go around them.

  3. What a cool project!! How did you make Bob's Sally-made name tag oval? I'm guessing cardboard behind the fabric. Off to check out the link for YOUR new name tag...
