A Loving Big Sister?

Pinni and... um... Cannoli?
I walked by the cage yesterday and seemed to be short one guinea pig.  It's not the first time I've had this issue.  On closer inspection, I realized Cannoli was still there and snapped a photo as proof.  There are two guinea pigs in that photo.  Really.

I shoved Pinniped off of the cozy and opened it to make sure Cannoli was alright.  It was cooler yesterday than it had been all week, but I wanted to make sure she wasn't overheating.  Plus I wasn't sure if being wrapped up like that was entirely her idea.  Visions of older brothers squishing younger siblings into sleeping bags or squashing them into closets suddenly popped in my head.  What a nice big sister, Pinni!

Cannoli wasn't in a rush to get out of the cozy; I shooed her out anyway.  What is it with warm weather and cozies?  Soon after I adopted Willow and Pippin I found them wrapped up in the same cozy with the edges tucked under.  What dopes!

So what do you think?  Was this an innocent (if unfortunate) choice of sleeping spots?  Or was this intentional imprisonment by a fatheaded older sister?

  1. I too, have the startling moment of going to their enclosure and not counting all three and having that sinking feeling. In my case, more often than not, there's a compelling reason why they got scared and there are two of them in one hidey or one of them is behind the hay receptacle and I didn't see her.

To address the question you are raising, I do see behavior like one of them sitting, very deliberately, in front of a hidey very close to the entrance, face first, in order to intimidate and trap one of their sisters. And, of course, when one is in heat, she may try to intimidate and hump her sister.

Inevitably, they pick on the one older pig who has some health problems, which they obviously can sense. But, for now, she is quite able to defend herself and order is not lost for long periods of time, it's the normal working out of differences.

And, one of my girls, Stella (a.k.a. the Black One), looks just like Pinniped. It's funny how her little snout is also a bit small and pointed in exactly the same way, her nostrils look identical. It makes me wonder if there is some kind of genetic component that goes along with being Black?

  2. Sounds like Cannoli was enjoying her sleeping spot despite the temperature.. either that, or she had given up on trying to escape from Pinni's chunky piggy behind!
