Squares and Pinwheel Flimsy

Woo-hoo!  I finished the quilt top with a day to spare.

I tweaked several little things as I started to sew it together, including flipping the whole quilt upside-down.  If I hadn't sewed some of the kites together, I'd have mirrored the design, too, so the color went from light to dark from the lower left to the upper right, instead of the direction it goes now.  Maybe I should just look at it on it's side?  LOL

I liked all the dark blue lumped together rather than split that I had previously.  However, moving that last bit of blue from from one corner to another required different yellow fabric than what I had on hand.  Eek! That prompted a last minute trip to the fabric store, quick before they closed for the weekend.  It's hard to find a dark yellow that isn't actually orange.  I bought four different yellows and two of them worked.  Whew!

I'm calling the pattern Squares and Pinwheels.  The quilt itself will be named Sunrise.

I discovered the point seams get bulky.  Not everything is flat because the kite edges have a slight bias and the blocks weren't perfectly square.  I'll have to be careful as I quilt it.  Overall, I like the pattern.  Trimming the half kites helped with the points, but I need to learn more on how to place the pieces to keep the blocks square.  I'm planing a second quilt using these basic blocks, so I'll get more practice soon.

Now this quilt needs a back!

  1. I love the gradation of color! and I'm smitten by the dark yellow kites with the blue centers. I could just fall into those colors and keep falling.

  2. I like how that is turning out, Sally! I agree that all the dark blues together works better. And I love the small bright squares inside the dark squares, changing to small dark squares inside the brights!

  6. A lovely finished top; it's such an interesting design. Is it your own design, or did you find it somewhere? I'm really interested because I've never seen it before. Good luck quilting over those bulky joins.

  7. I love the final color layout. Gorgeous work as usual. I took a class on piecing those wonky corners. It showed us how to lay out those corners in a flattened pinwheel style. I remember the class, just not the name of the process, nor who taught it. The tip was to make a clip (not thru the seam) just outside the corner, so you could iron the corner flat like a flower. Then when quilting the sandwich, making sure to run a stitch along those corners, so they wouldn't un-pop when the quilt was washed & dried.

  8. Ooh, this is such a pretty quilt Sally! I had fun with these shapes last summer when I had to work with a Deb Tucker Corner Pop ruler. :-)
