Manly Mug Rugs

I'm dragging my feet a little on my next big quilt in order to finish up some stuff I had been working on prior to Sunshine.  One project was a pair of mug rugs made from the last scraps from my charity shirt quilt.  These are fun!  I really like the colors and got a chance to practice some more free motion quilting.

First one I quilted with a loopy spiral I liked.  I think it's called cinnamon buns?  This would size nicely for a larger quilt.  I would have liked to have done more spirals in each loop.  Definitely will try this pattern again, though.

The second was a neat wavy and circle pattern.  I loved sewing this.  I couldn't easily the overall wave even on such a small piece.  If I were to do this on a bigger piece, I may chalk out the initial lines.  My waves got larger each row, so it's not even.  But I was amazed how round the circles were considering I wasn't putting a ton of effort into stitching it.  So if it came out this good without really trying, imagine what it would look like if I was?

I use the mug rugs I've made all the time.  These are a handsome pair.  If they don't get snatched up, I won't mind keeping them for myself.

  1. Hi Sally,
These are really great manly looking mug rugs! I love all the different plaids, and your quilting looks fabulous on them. I am still using my Valentine's mug rug because I don't have another one to use yet - but will be making one for a blog hop soon. I really should expand my choices and that would allow me to practice more FMQing. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. I loved the colors of the fabrics in that quilt - and now the mug rugs - regardless of the gender :)

  4. Yes, imagine what you would come up with if you were trying! =) Seriously though your FMQ is lovely. Love both the patterns you played with. Cool mug rugs. I too would want to keep them. I know I have said it before but I really love those fabrics together.
