We always fret about the weather for a pignic. Too hot? Too cold? Too wet? We decided to hold it on a possibly too-warm day instead of wait for the rain date, which currently looks too cold and rainy! We did the right thing. Under the trees at the Wellesley Bowl, it turned out to be a terrific day for a pignic.
We had a good showing even with the heat warnings: 24 sows and 14 boars. Lots and lots of human companions. We had participants travel as far as Groton, Connecticut and Pittsfield, Massachusetts! There were several newcomers, including one family that discovered there was a pignic just an hour before it started. We even had a trio well traveled boars that have attended the Bay Area Pignic (which is in California). That is a massive pignic that at least a few members of the Pig Patrol would love to see in person. Of course there were a handful of Boston pignic regulars. It's always nice to welcome back familiar faces.
Wedgwood and Mabel did not attend. It's too bad because I'm sure Mabel would have loved the common pen. However, I wasn't sure what unlimited grass would do to Wedgwood's digestive system, so they remained at home.
The costume parade was small this year though there were some neat entries. I loved the taco piggy shirt that went so well with her sombrero piggy. I liked the seeing-eye pig's costume. She reminded me of Pinniped. The Coast Guard skinny pig looked like she was ready to dive into action. The devil piggies and a pretty-in-pink pig were very cute.
I good time was had by most: there was one bloody nose and a scratched shoulder. Lots of nails clipped, many pigs oohed and aahed over. The weather remained comfortable until it was time to strike the cages, pack up, and go home. This wraps up another successful year of pignics (and some of the photos to prove it). Good memories until next year.
As always - thank you to the Pig Patrol. Your efforts are appreciated! Also thank you to our young volunteers that helped with setup, check-in, and tirelessly held lots of guinea pigs as they got their nails trimmed. You made the day run smoothly!

Those pignics look like a lot of fun. Cute fancy dress costumes. Love the photo of the pig being weighed.
ReplyDeleteWhoah, boars all the way from the Bay Area?! Well traveled indeed! That's awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love the costume contest photos - that's always so fun :) Thanks for sharing! The Boston Pignic is what inspired my friend to start the Bay Area Pignic and I took it over after a year or two when she moved away. I am astounded at how big it got, and how fast - there are so many more crazy guinea pig people lurking about than you think!
That was Momo? I had forgotten this was a Boston Pignic spinoff. You guys do it bigger and better - I love seeing the photos every year!
