Tidal Pool

After I finished Stepping Stones, there were lots of extra Homebase pieces left over.  Since I had enough to assemble half a small quilt, I decided to sew them together.  This was an opportunity to use the bright fabrics that I loved but didn't work with Stepping Stones.

Turns out the cut brights alone didn't look right, so I raided my stash for other primary colors.  This is the end result.  I had to purchase more background fabric to finish and the new stuff is from a different bolt.  The slight shade difference shows in bright sunlight, but given the scrappy nature of the quilt, it works.

I really like the wavy quilting I did on Stepping Stones.  I played with a few different designs for this quilt before simply quilting wiggly lines with my walking foot.  That was more of an adventure than I anticipated; I'm pleased with the final results.

I named this quilt Tidal Pool since it made me think of the interesting, pretty things I've found in shallow water.

I had a nice chunk of backing material from Sunshine, but not quite big enough to cover the whole back.  I augmented it with leftovers from the brights, plus a strip of the binding (which happened to be the backing to Stepping Stones).  See?  Very scrappy.

I love how Tidal Pool turned out and how the quilting looks on the back.  Seriously, I'm not sure which side is my favorite.  I debated about labeling it and ended up tucking a small label in the corner.  I'm considering removing it, just to leave the back alone.

It's 41½ inches square - or I should say squarish - it varies by a quarter inch.  How the heck did I manage that?  I was a bad girl and was so excited to bind it that I didn't make sure to square it first.  Bah.  But it looks great.  It will make a wonderful baby quilt or perhaps a funky wall hanging.

  5. Beautiful blocks. Love the bright colors against the neutrals black and white. You had to buy more background fabric? I am glad you made that difficult decision :-p The ripples of quilting are just so appropriate. Have a great weekend!!!

  7. Pretty work Sally, a good way to make the most of those bright colours even although you had to buy more backing fabric.
